The Herb Amster Center offers high quality training and development programs for organizations in Southeastern Michigan. The Center is the social enterprise arm of JFS, a social services agency based in Ann Arbor, which has been serving the whole community since 1993.
Aims of the Center
Established in 2011 as the legacy of Herb Amster, a local entrepreneur and generous mentor, the Amster Center's mission is develop revenue-generating businesses to support the important work of JFS. JFS provides a wide array of vital human services, including (but not limited to) a specialty food pantry, crisis management, employment services, refugee services, and older adult services.
In combination with JFS, the Center provides:

- Employee assistance
- Cultural sensitivity training

More about JFS
JFS works with the most vulnerable members of our community, regardless of their religion, race or background. This includes refugees, older citizens, and the unemployed. JFS is the preeminent U.S. State Department approved resettlement agent in the county.
With one of the most active food pantries in Michigan, and the only one in our county to provide specialty food items - Kosher, Halal, gluten-free, liquid nutrition, low sugar and more - JFS supports the older adult population and excels at individualized counseling for families, couples and individuals. The agency has long provided English as a Second Language classes and has taught students from nearly 50 different countries of origin. JFS also provides low-cost transportation to older adults and disabled persons, and answers our neighbors' critical requests for emergency support – helping to make our community a more comfortable place to live.
