Chelsea Milling Company
Chelsea Milling Company, makers of “Jiffy” mix and led by Formula Atlantic Racing Champion-turned-CEO Howdy Holmes, is one of the country’s oldest and most successful family-owned companies. “Jiffy” sells over half of all muffin mixes in the United States, nearly exclusively during the cold months. As a family-oriented business, Jiffy doesn’t hire seasonal workers. Thus, it takes care to ensure that it doesn’t lay off staff during the slow, warmer months. For the past 12 years, the company’s Discovery Program has been one strategy Jiffy uses to keep employees engaged during the slow periods. The Program brings trainers from various organizations to offer curricula to Jiffy staff members, enabling staff to build new skills, fulfill legal requirements and keep learning.
The Amster Center’s mindfulness instructor delivered our “Introduction to Mindfulness” training to over 100 Jiffy employees, ranging from executive staff to factory line workers and stretching over seven sessions to cover all hourly work shifts, and the results were overwhelming: Jiffy employees provided feedback indicating that they value mindfulness and found these skills extremely useful to being more present and productive in both their professional and personal lives.
